For most people, it may take a while to feel at home in a new place they’ve moved into. Even when the moving boxes are unpacked, and the fridge and pantry are full of food, there’s still a feeling of newness that accompanies your new house. There’s a big difference between living in a place you simply rely on for basic human needs, and a place you feel completely comfortable and at home in. We’ve compiled a list of five ways to help you feel at home in your new house below!
Hang Art
It’s always surprising to find people who hang art as soon as they move into their new house, especially when most people have at least a dozen or so frames waiting for pictures and places to reside. Research shows that simply hanging art in your home can reduce stress and actually make you happy. We get a large boost of pleasure from looking at things we consider beautiful or generally like to look at.
Hanging art is also a great way to set apart your house as your own! Choosing pictures or frames or pieces that you like is great to display your individuality in your home. The more you surround yourself with the things you enjoy and like to look at, the more at home you’ll feel!
Add Some House Plants
Just like hanging art pieces, plants are well-known for their ability to positively impact our mood and stress levels. Introducing greenery into your place fosters a sense of comfort and coziness, turning your house into a home. For those of you without a green thumb, there are plenty of low maintenance house plants. Set up herbs in mason jars on your kitchen windowsills, buy yourself fresh flowers every week, or get a succulent or two for your bedroom! The possibilities are endless, and the rewards are worth it!
Surround Yourself with Comfort
Comfort is key when making your house feel like a home. What’s better than feeling comfortable? Have an old couch that isn’t in the best shape? Put a soft throw blanket over it, and some new plush pillows and you’re guaranteed to feel at home. A cozy blanket can go a long way toward making any place feel more inviting. Weighted or heated blankets are the absolute best on top of comforters. Is there anything more snuggle-worthy than a heated blanket? Once you surround yourself with things that make you feel comfortable, you’ll be feeling at home in no time!
Add More Lighting
Few things make a house feel more uninviting than low lighting or harsh fluorescent lighting. Having warm white or yellow lights throughout your house promotes relaxation. Add additional light where appropriate as well! Open shades or doors to encourage natural light to flow through. Pretty much any light additive is sure to make any space feel homier. Consider lighting a few candles throughout the rooms you’re in the most; they add a nice amount of warmth and coziness to your home.
Keep it Clean
The feeling of getting into a freshly made bed with clean sheets is the same feeling you should have when stepping into your home. Nobody can be completely comfortable in a dirty, cluttered space. If you want to feel truly relaxed at home, make sure it’s cleaned up! Put things back where they belong, give it a good dusting or vacuum every once in a while, and wipe down dirty spaces. Your house is a representation of you, so you should make an effort to keep your now home looking and feeling clean and comfortable.
